Classicism and decoration. Return to the figure
Having gained worldwide renown by the 1930s, Fernand Léger exhibited in Europe and the United States, where he travelled on several occasions.
It was at this time that his pictorial research broke away from a mechanistic style, focusing instead on Classicist tradition.
His work signalled a return to the figure and the development of decorative research in close liaison with architecture.
Sharing the views of the Front populaire, Léger spoke out during Querelle du realism debates, organised by Aragon at the Maison de la culture à Paris.
In 1937 he took part in the Exposition internationale des Arts et techniques.
